Fresh Perspectives

The Association for Convention Operations Management raced into the friendly, hip, cosmopolitan city of Indianapolis, Indiana for its annual convention the weekend of January 9 – 11, 2004. Included in the convention attendance of nearly 400 people were some VIPs – first time attendees who brought with them a fresh assortment of questions, answers and ideas.

Some, like Darrin Lettinga of the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel had questions. “How can we work more proactively with planners to get details sooner?” Sessions like Set Up 101, Facility Crisis Management offered him practical solutions. He really enjoyed talking with peers at the Hotel Roundtable luncheon. “I came away with lots of ideas!”

Others, like Susan Graham of Tourism Vancouver were looking for answers. She found the Servicing Through Construction particularly relevant and timely. The Vancouver Convention Center is looking forward to a major expansion in 2005. “I now have tips and ideas on minimizing challenges. I also have a list of suggestions and questions for the next expansion board meeting.”

Still others, like suppliers, came looking to forge and reinforce partnerships. Robert Colvin of HRTT Solutions was able to connect with the service professionals who use his products and services at the Housing Registration Horizons course. Freeman Decorating Company’s Michelle Mor, a first time attendee and speaker, summed up the supplier perspective best. “We are an extension of the sales and services team. We have to work together to create positive client experiences.”

Most, like Joyce Cummiskey of the Amway Grand Plaza, came looking for the camaraderie shared between service managers. “No one else knows what we do or all that it entails. It comforts me to know other CSMs share the same challenges and concerns.” She appreciated the tips her colleagues had on how to share responsibility with other hotel department managers when challenges occur.

All, including Larnita Goldston of the San Diego Visitor and Convention Bureau declared the convention a success. She especially enjoyed the CMP Prep Course and looks forward to taking the test in July. “I was looking for ideas on how to do my job better and I found them!” ACOM Indianapolis 2004 – Finishing First in Service!
